Aventura Foreign Film Series presents The Piano in a Factory
|
"A delightful Chinese film that artfully blends music, romance, comedy and just a little social comment... a thoroughly enjoyable movie experience!" - Mark Adams, Screen Daily
When Chen's estranged wife reappears asking for a divorce and custody of their daughter, the musician girl decides she will live with whoever can provide her with a piano. Chen's struggle thus begins. When efforts to borrow money and even steal a piano fail, Chen concocts a preposterous plan - he'll make a piano from scratch! He persuades a bunch of reluctant, but loyal, misfit friends to help him forge the instrument in a derelict factory from a heap of scrap steel. Though crude in design and tune, the factory piano awaits its first and final performance from his little girl.

Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida presents Fairy Doll
|
|
Aventura
|
March 3, 2012 - March 4, 2012 Calendar
|
"Fairy Doll", originally "Die Puppenfee" by composer Josef Bayer and first performed in 1888, was one of the most successful productions in the late 19th century.
Issaev's recreation and revival was a gift to the audiences of South Florida in 2009. "Bayer's music is so inspiring and beautiful, I could not let his opportunity pass by", says Vladimir Issaev. "I fell in love with every variation of this music and the more I researched, the more I felt South Florida's audiences deserved a ballet production of this kind."
The production counts on creative and imaginative costume designer Jorge Gallardo to make all dancers look like real dolls and the sets will be under the responsibility of painter and artist Elena Bond.
* Arts Ballet Theatre maintains a very strict late seating policy. Latecomers will NOT be seated until intermission.

The Melodies and Memories Series Thanks for the Memories
|
|
Aventura
|
March 7, 2012 - March 11, 2012 Calendar
|
Get ready to celebrate the centennial of America's oldest and longest-running movie studio, Paramount Pictures, and the beautiful music that they brought to the life. From Thanks for the Memories, Silver Bells, and Swinging on a Star to Staying Alive and Flashdance, the music of Paramount Pictures mirrors the soundtrack of our lives.
Founded in 1921, Paramount was the first studio to receive an Oscar for the Best Picture. During the mid 30's, as the country was mired in the depths of depression, Paramount unveiled its cheerful antidote to the times, Shirley Temple. Franklin Roosevelt was quoted as saying "she not only saved the studio, she saved the country."
As World War Two dragged on, it was Bing Crosby, Bob Hope and Dorothy Lamour to the rescue with the screwball comedy, "Road To ....." series. Movie music success continued at Paramount, the studio responsible for two of the largest grossing musical films of all time, Flashdance and Saturday Night Fever.
This show is part of the Melodies and Memories Series, bringing you four "enchanted evenings" of glorious music from the Great American Songbook. An elite group of talented musicians and singers will join Barry Levitt, former Artistic Director of the 92nd Street Y's world-renowned "Lyrics and Lyricists" series in four spirited celebrations of great songs from Tin Pan Alley, Broadway and Hollywood.

Aventura Foreign Film Series presents Revanche
|
Aventura Foreign Film Series presents Revanche Hosted by Shelly Isaacs
"An extraordinary film, mythic in feeling." - Mick LaSalle, San Francisco Chronicle
"A darkly compelling film from Austria, can be viewed as either a thriller with psychological overtones or a psychological drama with thriller elements." - Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times
"Revanche involves a rare coming together of a male's criminal nature and a female's deep needs, entwined with a first-rate thriller. It is also perceptive in observing characters, including a proud old man. Rare is the thriller that is more about the reasons of people instead of the needs of the plot." - Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times
At once a gripping thriller and a tragic drama of nearly Greek proportions, "Revanche" is the stunning, Oscar--nominated, international breakthrough film from Austrian filmmaker Götz Spielmann. In a ragged section of Vienna, hardened ex-con Alex works as an assistant in a brothel, where he falls for Ukrainian hooker Tamara. Their desperate plans for escape unexpectedly intersect with the lives of a rural cop and his seemingly content wife. With meticulous, elegant direction, Spielmann creates a tense, existential, and surprising portrait of vengeance and redemption, and a journey into the darkest forest of human nature, in which violence and beauty exist side by side.
Nominated for Best Foreign Film at the 2009 Academy Awards®
German & Russian with English subtitles. Not Rated.
